Making the Diagnosis

Diagnosis of a child with FAS includes the mother's drinking history, a physical examination of the child and observation. The doctor may also test the child's IQ and look for learning disabilities. This will help direct the child to school programs and services to help them learn. To rule out a possible genetic disorder, a doctor may request genetic testing.
