bromocriptine mesylate

By Novartis

What is this medication for?

Bromocriptine belongs to a group of medications called ergot alkaloids. It is used to treat Parkinson's disease and conditions caused by too much of the hormone prolactin. These conditions include some types of menstrual problems, increased milk production, female infertility, male development problems, and small tumors called adenomas. Bromocriptine is also used to treat acromegaly (overproduction of growth hormone causing unusual enlargement of the hands, jaw, and feet).

For Parkinson's disease, bromocriptine works by stimulating specific parts of the brain that are involved in this disease and helps to improve muscle control and movement by affecting the balance of a chemical in the brain called dopamine. For conditions associated with too much prolactin, bromocriptine works by blocking the release of prolactin from the pituitary gland (in the brain).
