Tests during pregnancy

Good neonatal care means keeping a close eye on the developments of both mom and baby. There are some standard tests and scans that your doctor will perform to follow and monitor your body changes from the first trimester to the day of birth.

Ultrasound is a safe test that allows an inside peek at the developing fetus. It is a tool for tracking your baby's growth and watching out for any complications. Learn what you need to do to prepare for an ultrasound.

Your doctor might also decide to do a urinalysis (a urine test) to check for dietary concerns or other conditions that might affect the course of your pregnancy. Urine tests are often used to diagnose pregnancy, too.

A glucose tolerance test could be in order if there is concern that you have developed gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a rare and temporary condition, but women who have it are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
