The Facts
Thrombophlebitis is an inflammation of a vein with a blood clot at the site
of inflammation. The term comes from a combination of thrombus, meaning
blood clot, and phlebitis, meaning inflammation or infection of a vein.
Thrombophlebitis is classified as either superficial or deep.
Deep thrombophlebitis is often called deep venous thrombophlebitis (DVT).
This condition is more common and also more worrisome than superficial thrombophlebitis.
